Teaching

My teaching philosophy is rooted in my deep belief in the power of narratives to shape cultures, geographies, and ways of being. As a descendant of pastoral camel herders who were criminalized by the colonial state for refusing to settle as peasant-farmers and relinquish their pasturelands, I have long been fascinated by the politics and poetics of place, people, and their relations. This personal history informs my enduring interest in how narratives of modern progress have justified control over nature and native communities, producing geographies of uneven development. In both my teaching and research on political ecology and environmental studies, I critique these hegemonic narratives by foregrounding questions of environmental justice, equity, and subaltern histories. I make these concerns central to my pedagogy through a twofold strategy of cultivating critique and creativity among my students. Through critique, I train students to question dominant stories of the world; through creativity, I encourage them to imagine alternative, inclusive, and equitable ones.
